Growing Requirements
This cultivar is very hardy and will tolerate full sun; however, optimal results are achieved when the plant is provided with partial protection.
Characteristics
‘Baby Doll’ is a miniature cultivar with a low-to-medium growth habit. The leaves are narrow, pointed, and slightly to moderately undulated with edges that may turn upward; new growth can appear twisted. The foliage is dark bronze-green with pink and red margins and markings, and the petioles are similarly colored. In cooler months, new growth flushes with bright hot pink. If left unpruned, the slender trunks may become prostrate, prompting new growth to emerge from the stems.
History
Commonly known as ‘Baby Doll’ in Australia, this cultivar is also referred to as ‘Red Edge’ or ‘Piccolo’. It is a long-standing cultivar known to frequently sport a larger, red-leafed variety called ‘Red Sister’. It is also associated with ‘Little Sister’, a variant that shares the coloration of ‘Baby Doll’ but maintains a size intermediate between ‘Baby Doll’ and ‘Red Sister’.
